Why do you travel?

I first started traveling when I was about six years old, mainly because my dad had lots of business trips that he would take our family on. We moved to France when I was eight and to California when I was 11. During our time in Europe, we did a lot of traveling and since then I’ve just been really curious about different places, cultures, and languages. I travel to fulfill the curiosity that I have about the rest of the world, what it looks like, and how other people live their day-to-day lives. I also like the challenge of being somewhere new and having to figure out how to navigate it. It’s kind of like being a kid and having to learn about your surroundings again.

Share a travel experience that really shaped who you are today.

As I mentioned above, when I was eight, I moved to France with my family. Despite being so young, I believe that period of my life instilled in me a strong desire to see more of the world. I had to learn a new language and adapt to a new country. This really shaped who I am, from my love of travel and language learning to my ability to adapt to new surroundings. At the time, I hated learning French. But today being able to speak it and my connection to French culture are things I would never trade. Furthermore, having to learn French also sparked my interest in learning other languages – so much so that I went on to study Spanish, Farsi, Turkish, Italian and Portuguese.

Check a bag or carry on?

That’s a tough one, because I’m one of those people that like to have everything they need with them at all times! I’ve gotten a bit better though. If I’m only going to one place, I might check a bag, but if I have lots of moving to do (between cities or countries), definitely a carry on!

Do you collect souvenirs when you travel? If so, what?

Not really, no! My photos are my souvenirs. Unless I find something really unique to the destination. For example, I bought aloe products from Aruba, a pair of babouche from Marrakech and small handmade products from Guatemala.

You just won an all expenses paid trip. Where are you going? Who are you taking with you?

Paris and my best friend. I know it sounds a bit cliche and I’ve been to Paris many times, but it’s my favourite place in the world. I went there a lot when I was young and it was where I did my first solo trip. It has a very special place in my heart. It’s my happy place and I would go back any chance I get.

Where are you heading next?

I go to NYC every summer, so probably there. The next new destination for me will be Portugal at the end of August!

A quote you live by is…

“If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It’s a plus for everybody.”
